Located in the southwestern part of Montgomery County in Texas, Magnolia city was the last dry city in the county as the sale of alcoholic beverages was prohibited until 2011 when the citizenry voted for its allowance. The City practices General Law Type A and has a mayor and several council members. Todd Kana is the current mayor while Richard Carby (Mayor pro tem), Brenda Hoppe, Jonny Williams Matthew "Doc" Dantzer, and John Bramlett are the present council members. Magnolia is represented in the Texas Senate, the Texas House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and the United States House of Representatives. Magnolia has a total area of 2.8 square miles which consists only of land. It is situated at the point of intersection of FM 1774 which is also known as Magnolia Boulevard to the south and FM 1488. FM 1774 passes through SH 249 in Pinehurst which is a few miles from the north of Tomball.

SH 249 then continues into Houston. Towards the northern part of Magnolia, FM 1774 travels to the Texas Renaissance Festival in Todd Mission. FM 1488, on the other hand, connects Magnolia to Interstate 45 to the east in between The Woodlands and Conroe. On the western part of FM 1488 in Hempstead.
